Summary:
The story takes place in 1890’s with upper class family, Edna, her husband Léonce, and their two children, vacationing for the summer on Grand Isle, an island just off the Louisiana shore near New Orleans. Also vacationing with them is some of Edna’s friends the Ratignolle family and Madame Ratignolle. But Edna’s attitude toward her family then Madame Ratignolle is very different, Madame Ratignolle is a "mother-woman," gladly devote her entire being to take care of her children, husband, and household. While on the island Edna’s be-friends Mademoiselle Reisz pianist, Edna watches her performance and it stirs Edna deeply, awakening her “capacity for passion and engendering the process of personal discovery” that Edna undertakes.
A young man named Robert Lebrun was also on this island and every summer he strikes up a romance with a different woman, most of the time a married woman, but this summer Edna caught his eye.
As Edna begins to wonder about her life and what she wants and what she wants to be Robert just so happen shows up into her life and be before she knows it she becomes very interested and falling for Robert by the end of the summer. The sudden seriousness of his romantic feelings for her “compels” him to follow through on his trip to Mexico to seek his fortune.
Back home Edna starts to pursue her art instead of her family her husband is shock of her new attitude and how she is putting herself before her family , he talks to a family friend that tells him to let it be and to let her focus on art and get it out of her system. Edna even has an affair but her heart is still with Robert. She does so well that she started selling her pieces, and moves
