The Tempest
The Summary-
In this story The Tempest the plot is revolving around this storm coming in and they are on this boat trying to get to land, and the people on the boat is the King of Naples and his servants. The storm eventually gets to be so bad that the boat splits off and each side is out at sea and sunk. The two main characters Prospero and his daughter Miranda were eventually seen to be the reasoning behind the sinking ship. These two decide after talking a while about the past that her father had endured that they are going to try and get off of that island and try to find his brother and get him back. This does not work the way that they wanted to and they end up being stranded on an island for twelve years. He finally gets the courage to try and get off this island maybe take revenge on his brother for all that he has done to him and maybe be able to get back what was first his. After the shipwreck the Prince has taken little time to grieve over the face that his father may be gone, and this is because he has fallen in love with Prospero’s daughter Miranda. Even as happy as he is for his he starts to worry that they may be moving too fast and he fixes that real quick. He soon enough passes his tests and the permission is granted for them to be married. The brothers end up apologizing to one another and he gets his dukedom back.
The setting-
The setting of this story took place mostly on the island even though some of it was on the sea and back in Milan there was quite a bit on the island. Prospero and Miranda were stuck on the island for a good twelve years. This was all happening during the time of the Renaissance The Island that they were eventually all stuck on was known to be an island in the Mediterranean Sea probably off the coast of Italy. They have to eventually think of this Island of their home because being put on this Island for twelve years and being Miranda’s child hood Prospero has to learn how to make is suitable for her to be able to grow up there. As the sea also plays a part in the setting because at one point in the story Miranda and her father Prospero are looking out into the sea at the shipwreck. He begins helping them onto the island from the sea where it is safer. The other interesting way to look at the setting is that yes it mostly takes place on this island, but not in just one place all over the island. Prospero uses his magic to disperse all of the people on that ship all over the island. Not only did the setting take place on this island it took place all over the island where everyone was scattered around.
Characters
Prospero is the father of Miranda and use to be duke of Milan before his brother took that spot form him and the sad part is that he was not alone is doing it he had much help. He was forced out by his brother to flee on a boat with his daughter Miranda and then to eventually get stranded on this island for twelve years. He was granted powers that aided him to punishes his enemies, but then be able to forgive them for all the wrong that they had done to either him or his daughter. The worst part about all of this is that he is a nice character and has done no harm to others but is getting punished and hurt by his brother who cares nothing about him.
Miranda is the daughter of Prospero and she is with him when everything is happening with the shipwreck and all of the horrible happenings that her father’s brother has done. Since Miranda was brought to the island at such a young age she is naïve and kind to others that she sees around her. She has not gotten the same treatment as other girls she does not have females in her life and the only two men that she has ever really spoken to is of course he fathers and then Caliban. She is kind hearted and true to herself and very faithful to her father and trust worthy of him. She eventually falls in love with the Prince when he reaches her island in a shipwreck and they are granted the permission to get married.
Caliban is the other person and the only other man in Miranda’s life at first and he is Prospero’s servant slave type of man. He is not only Prospero’s slave but the son to the now passed witch Sycorax, and she is the one the acquainted Prospero and his daughter Miranda to the island at first. Caliban feels like that island is truly his now that he mother has passed and only feels like Prospero is just holding him hostage. He thinks that it was their first he has the rights, but he now belongs to Prospero and his daughter. Sometimes the thought that Caliban encounters and the words that come out of his mouth can he brutal, but the there is other times where he is a genuine guy and it does not matter what he happened.
Conflict
In the story The Tempest there readers can conclude that there is conflict with man v man and this is between Prospero and his bother. His brother has him taken away to an island while he takes his place as duke, and eventually with the magic that Prospero gets he seeks revenge on his brother.
Themes
The illusion of justice- This is showing how Prospero feels justice knowing that the wrong that his brother had done to him he is getting paid back for. He also gets to be the one to serve him the justice that he deserves.
The difficulty of distinguishing “men” from “monsters,” – This story shows how hard it is to truly know who is truly a loyal man and who is a monster around you. In reference Prospero had no idea that his brother would turn into a monster and take his place as duke. Then there is the man that the prince shows he is to be able to love Miranda.
The allure of ruling a colony- This type of them can be taken to lightly sometimes and in this book some should have realized what they had and not taken it for granted and not trying to show is off as much to where they were bragging about it.
Symbol
The tempest- In this story The Tempest is not only the title of the book, but it is one of the major symbols. Tempest means a violent windy storm and in this story that relates to a lot of the conflict. The tempest causes many problems but in the same way let people find things that could help them in their future. The storm may have separated the Prince and the King, but it helped the Prince find his true love; Miranda.
The game of chess- The way that the game chess symbolizes the book is that the Prince had promised Mirandas father Prospero that he would keep his hands to himself until they were married. The two of them decided that the easiest way would be to play the game of chess.
Prospero’s books- This book is a huge symbol in the story because a lot of the magic that Prospero’s magic is from that book. Caliban has even stated that he would be pretty much nothing without that book and pretty vulnerable without it.
