Wise Blood

Wise Blood
Flannery O’Connor’s novel Wise Blood is set during World War II and centers around a recently discharged injured service man, Hazel Motes. Motes is the grandson of a traveling preacher. Although Motes has a strong religious back ground because of his grandfather he struggles to believe in religion at all and after returning home to find his family’s home abandoned sets of to prove religion does not exist. Along Motes journey he encounters young man, Enoch Emery, who also does not believe in God. Together Motes and Emery encounter the con artist Asa and Sabbath Lily Hawks who pretend to be reverent Christians. Asa even goes so far as to pretend he is blind stating that he blinded himself in order to avoid the material trappings of the world, but Motes figures him out and Asa flees. His daughter Sabbath Lily is no more virtues than Asa and is in fact a nymphomaniac and becomes Motes lover. Motes also encounter another con-artist, Hoover Shoats, who eventually renames himself Onnie Jay Holy and begins to profit off those that are also disenfranchised with religion by obtaining $1 for membership into Holy Church of Christ Without Christ.” This angers Motes as he simply wants to spread his word and in fact angers him so much he ultimately kills Holy for this action. Of course this action only leading Motes to such guilt that he actual does blind himself with lye, what Asa had pretended to do and eventually dies due to exposure.
C. For each title, identify and provide an analysis for the most important characters in at least 150 words each (not what they look like or minor information - what they do, importance to the work, etc.).
Hazel Mote is a young man recently discharged from the army and is the protagonist of the novel. Motes returns home from his service only find his family home abandoned and his family gone. Mote moves on himself and while Mote’s grandfather is a traveling preacher and Mote is raised with a religious back ground he struggles with his beliefs and comes back from war a devote atheist intent on spreading his word against God. Mote creates the Church without Christ, which is eventually taken over by Hoover Shoots. However at the end of the book Mote not only finds God but punishes himself for his sins. Mote cannot escape the teachings he learned early in life.
Asa and Sabbath Lily Hawks are con-artist that pretends to be God fearing holy people, but have no religion whatsoever. Asa pretends to be blind as a result of his own hand so that he may cast away material goods of the world, but is in fact not blind. Sabbath Lily, Asa’s daughter is no better than her father and only wants to improve her life standing. Sabbath Lily is anything but pure and is in fact a nymphomaniac.
Hoover Shoats is also nothing more than a con-artist, looking only to get rich. He takes over Mote’s idea, church and message and promotes membership for a dollar entry. Shoats is eventually killed by Motes for his deceptive and falsehoods.
Enoch Emery is a young self absorbed snot nosed kid who is only interested in his own satisfaction and good. Emery is Mote’s buddy and dedicated follower encouraging Motes with crazy ideas and schemes, although these don’t actually work for him. In fact, Emery’s stealing from the zoo doesn’t impress Motes at all and Sabbath Lily’s portrayal of the mother and child only enrages Motes to destroy it.
D. For each title, describe the setting - where and when the work takes place, historical context - in at least 250 words.
Wise Blood is a fiction novel that is set in the deep south in the 1930’s and 40’s in the fictional town of Taulkinham in Alabama. The novel was written by Flannery O’Connor and was first published in 1952. The novel began as a collection of short stories and did not receive much critical acclaim at the time of its publication. The characters include street preachers, used car salesman, users and abusers all fighting against each other for ultimately their own self destruction.
E. For each title, identify the type of conflicts (man v man, man v self, man v society, man v nature, man v technology) and describe each
In this novel it is talking about the conflict of (man vs. Man). The conflict of man vs. man is used in the novel between Enoch and Hazel. Also talks about the conflict of (man vs. himself), this is shown by hazel in how he struggles with his own self in believe in his religion, and (man vs. society) in how Hazel deals with everyone who preaches his story without them truly knowing they did.
F. For each title, identify the major themes - at least 3 - with a brief description of how these are portrayed - about two sentences for each theme.
Christ's redemption of humanity comprises the main theme of Wise Blood. It is a major theme due to the fact that the main character is struggling with his religion. Out of all my research this is all I could find.
G. For each title, include 3 major symbols with a description of what they symbolize and the importance to the piece of literature.
Hazel Motes’ Essex automobile serves as a symbol for Hazel himself, corresponding to his own spiritual decay, although the initial quality of the car's workmanship corresponds to his Christian upbringing, which he cannot deny the car declines.
The price of the car is another symbol; it is the symbol of his soul. Being that is was they wanted him to pay for the car.
The prophet that Motes stalks is a symbol of deceit, and is what leads to the killing Motes does.
H. Include one relevant image and one relevant video for each title.
