1. “The Iliad” by Homer is divided into 24 books and in each is
an epic poem which he
sets during The Trojan War. Homers work includes the battles
between King
Agamemnon and Achilles. As you start of reading, ten years have
passed in which
references Greek History, legends, and other events that will
end up effecting the life
of Achilles. Homers first begins with Achilles wrath and how
Agamemnon takes his
concubine, which enrages and causes him to pull out of the war.
A duel begins with
Paris and Menelaus and this brings on major tension. Menelaus is
successful in the
battle and just as he is about to kill Paris, Aphrodite pulls him out of the battle. Now
throughout each of the 24 books, Homer outlines how the truce is
broken and the
goddess Aphrodite is wounded. Also, the Greek people build a
wall, the fighting
continues to build, Achilles with Agamemnon, as well as Hector;s
body is recovered
and buried. Hektor’s body is demolished and even after Patroktos
has received a
proper funeral. The Gods dont like this by any means and so they
send a message
down to Achilles telling him to give up the body. When the
Trojan King (Hektors
father) asks Achilles for his sons body and the two men eat
together and share a
moment of humanity which is a huge part and symbol of “The
Iliad”. We know though
that Achilles will die and Troy will be captured. This starts “The Iliad”. Themes of “The
Iliad” include anger, betrayal, love, hate, and patriotism.
2. Paris wants to keep his lady and does not want anything to
happen to her. He
protects her and loves her with all his heart. Priam gets what
he wants which is his
sons body back. Hector defends his city and protects it the best
he can because that
was the most important thing for him to do throughout “The
Iliad”. Helen wants Hector
back but also is a “drama queen” so she gets lots of attention
and she seems to have
lots of regrets for being that way. Andromache just simple did
not want to lose her
husband and will do whatever it takes for him to be okay. Aeneas
is the leader of
helping to defend his allies and make sure everything is good
with them. Now the
Greeks such as Achilles wants to in simple terms to make his
people regret and never
forget not letting Agamemnon insult him. Agamemnon wants to
defeat the mighty
Trojans and Menelaus wants his wife back after a long time away
from her (19 years I
believe). Ajax and Diomedes want glory and fame in my opinion.
And last, Odysseus
wanted to get the war over with and just go back home. He does
not like the structure
of the war and everything that it involves.
3. “The Iliad” takes place inn the city of Troy in Asia Minor by
the Armies of the
Achaeans. Greek mythology was narrated in a cycle of epic poems
of which only two,
the Iliad and the Odyssey of Homer, survive intact. The Iliad
describes an episode
late in this war, and the Odyssey describes the journey home of
one of the Greek
leaders, Odysseus. Ancient Greeks believed that the events Homer
related were
basically true. There remains no certain evidence that Homer's
Troy ever existed, still
less that any of the events of the Trojan War cycle ever took
place. Many historians
believe that the Homeric stories are a fusion of various stories
of sieges and
expeditions by the Greeks of the Bronze Age or Mycenean period,
and do not
Austin Northcutt
describe actual events. Those who think that the stories of the
Trojan War derive from
a specific historical conflict usually date it to between 1300
BC and 1200 BC. They
believed that this war took place in the 13th or 12th century
BC, and that Troy was
located in the vicinity of the Dardanelles in what is now
north-western Turkey. By
modern times both the war and the city were widely believed to
be mythological. In
1870, however, the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann
excavated a site in
this area which he believed to be the site of Troy.
5. In “The Iliad”, the major conflict is the Trojans vs. Greeks.
In my opinion this entire 24
book is man v. man because well its about war and how each wants
to fight for what
they believe. Every person who died in the war died for
something that they loved and
thats their beliefs and they fought for it.
6. There are lots of themes in “The Iliad”, but one is love.
Nothing ties this war without
love and passion for what they believe in. Also, loving there
husbands or wifes and
watching them get closer to you. Another theme is the complete
opposite and thats
hate. There is a lot of hate in “The Iliad” between the Greeks
and Trojans. Also, in a
war, they are not going to like each other of course but the way
they treated each
other was just awful. Lastly, patriotism was a huge theme
because if you were a
Trojan you were giving all you had to fight. Now if you were a
Greek, you were again
giving all you had to fight for you group and what you believe
in. It all comes back to
what they believe in.
